I’m sure you’ve heard by now if you are involved in the internet marketing industry that list building, sustaining that list, and selling to a targeted list is the most profitable option to making money on the internet.

Of course there are other options, which is why, in my opinion, making a living online is a fantastic and exciting means of employment. That coupled with the fact the I don’t like to work around someone else’s schedule allows me to work on the number one most important aspect with working online, list building.

I’ll be the first to admit that list building isn’t easy – in fact, it’s one of the hardest things to do online, and anyone who tells you different is straight up trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Building a list, and keeping a list takes constant dedication to your niche and your customers. This article will briefly go over some of the best ways you can build, sustain, and profit from your list. Assuming you are using the right online marketing tools ie: email autoresponders, capture page creator, contact manager etc? These are the types of marketing tools you will need to build your list.

Sounds pretty straight forward, right?

List building.

First of all we all have to start somewhere so if you are reading this and you have nobody on your list, I want you to pay very close attention to this next line: Building your list starts and ends with your willingness to help people with a particular problem they are facing, and a solution you are providing.

You can use many different methods to build your list; the 3 big ones are organic traffic, paid traffic, and referral style traffic.

You might trial and error to see what works best for you. I’ve found that organic traffic works best with article marketing and blogging. Once you have brought people to your site, blog, or sales page you must capture their excitement by getting their email address, name, and any other information you might be asking for on your opt-in form. You must use an opt-in form to do this, and this a tool no marketer should be without.

Sustaining your list.

Getting people to sign up for your list is one thing, but keeping them there, informed, and excited is another. There are several ways you can keep your lists attention. A great way of doing this is to have at least 4-6 months worth of weekly emails that will automatically be sent to them. This will do 2 things; keep them informed and keep you in the know about what’s new in your niche.

Profiting from your list.

The most exhilarating part about having your own list is being able to convert them and make a profit. One very important thing to note: if you are involved with an affiliate program and do not own your own email autoresponder and keep using the companies, you are likely building the companies list and not your own. Ask if you are able to take your list with you if or when you leave.

While you are educating them and being helpful to them with their problem, you can sell those products and services that are related to your niche. There is a fine line you must walk here.

Do not become one of those marketers that try to sell their lists on a daily basis. You will find out very quickly that your list is not interested in buying something from you everyday. Instead, pick your times, and offer something of value before you try to sell to them.

If you have not offered something valuable yet, then you are not ready to sell to your list.

This is a service provided to you by a company that you will have an account with. The price of this service is going to vary a lot and you usually will have to invest monthly, I’d really like to stress the word “invest” because that is exactly what you will be doing… investing in your business. There are free services out there but I personally avoid them.

If you are new to online marketing and are a bit confused about where to start, you are not alone. Many new comers to the industry are slowly but surely learning the importance of using tools to market and manage their online business and you will too.

At first, you may not have a clue what marketing tools are, that is why I’m writing this, to help you better understand what they are and why they should be considered if you want to have a profitable business.

When a customer shows an interest in your product, program or service, you need to follow up with that person, if you don’t you will most likely lose that sale.

Using an automatic responder to do your personalized follow up, can dramatically increase the amount of sales you receive as well as cut down the time it would take you to do this manually.

Once someone is interested in what you have to offer and requests more information there are numerous things that can distract them away from what they have requested so that’s why it is vital to get your offer in front of a customer more than once. Most times a customer will not take you up on your offer on the first exposure so ideally you will want to have this placed in front of them 5-7 times and you do this with a sequence of automatic responder messages.

How do they start to receive your messages? Well, if you already have a program you are involved with, you may already have a Capture Page. When someone signs up to your capture page, they will start to receive your messages one at a time and hopefully you are able to edit these messages as you see fit because some messages can come across too “selly” and people don’t like to be sold to. You should be in complete control as to how many days, weeks or even months apart they will receive your messages.

One thing to really pay attention to; if you are involved with a program and people sign up to your capture page chances are if you do not have your own personal capture page and automatic autoresponder you are probably building the companies list not your own!

Say a year from now you quite promoting the product, program or service you are currently involved with… will you be able to take your list with you?

So a solution to this is, if you already have an autoresponder with your current company, you can easily copy and paste the autoresponder series of letters into your own email autoresponder account and you can even copy the capture page and make your own using the same information putting in your own sign up form and then link the 2 together and still promote this way you will have your own personal list you can take with you wherever you go.

That is why I can not stress enough getting your own automatic responder account, all the hard work that goes into building your list, your business and ultimately your future is going to be all for nothing if you can’t take your list with you.

Once you start building your list you must never stop.

These are what we call “hot leads” people who are interested in what you have to offer, all you have to do is give them what they want and eventually they will purchase, maybe not today, next week but maybe in 3 months from now.

The timing has to be right for them to purchase and you want to be there when that time comes!

Disappointments.

The reason I’m so upset about what I’m about to tell you is because it has never happened to me before… until sometime last night. I like to think that I’m a different kind of internet marketer, actually I don’t like to think of myself as an Internet Marketer because for me it has a bit of a negative connotation, it makes me think of a person who is trying to “sell” something, someone who has dollar signs in their eyes.

Although I’m in business to make money, I don’t want to “sell” to people, I want to help enhance their business and in turn enhance their life.

I will tell you this, there is no better feeling in the world than knowing that I played some small part in helping someone else attain success, no matter how small or large that success becomes.

I have done everything in my power to help or direct the people on my 12 Second Commute team and I see us all as equals, we all want the same things, we are all just at different points in the “game” and as long as we are moving forward at a slow and steady pace, I know we will win the race.

I’m rambling.

I could go on and on…

But, I want to warn you in advance if you  ever join my 12 Second Commute team, I won’t call it a “downline” because that’s negative to me as well, if you are ever on my team, I’m going to be the biggest pain in the ass sponsor you will ever have because I want you to succeed. Even if you give up on yourself, I won’t!

Sometime in the wee hours of the morning, the very first person to join my 12 Second Commute team QUIT! I have turned myself inside out, upside down and backwards to reach out. It started off so well, then turned into nothing at all. But I kept trying and giving… leaving her to her business but letting her know I was still there.

I got nothing in return. Sure she had a good following of her own, they are also on my team but that’s not the point.

I lost one.

For me, it doesn’t mater who’s team you’re on, if I can help I will.

My good friend Jim Roche has always told me “don’t get too high and don’t get too low,” I guess I feel this way because I care so much. I feel as though I have failed. I prided myself knowing that not a single person that has joined me has left… until today.

I know the old saying goes “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make em drink” well I’m sure as hell going to try! (The image I have in my head is arms and legs wrapped around the horses neck, while hanging over a puddle of water trying desperately to get his head down.)

You are not invited to my pity party, the bar is closed… time to go home.

When selecting an email marketing provider, price is always a factor in the decision-making process, cool… I understand that.

As soon as I found this company (I’ll leave unnamed) I had to write a blog post to warn the new comers to the online marketing world.

I just found a company that “offers GREATER VALUE and a greater variety of pricing packages than any other service on the market today!”

This one service in particular I found is asking $159.90/mth for you to be able to send out 100,000 emails a month. They gotta be kidding right? I mean seriously?

See, that’s what aggravates me to no end! Everybody has the best value and the best pricing… Don’t get me wrong, I think having options is great but seriously $159.90/mth for an autoresponder with limitations?

And their bare bones plan which allows you to send out 2,000 emails a month was $19.90/mth and an additional $5.00 for an additional 1000 if you went over your allowed 2,000.

As far as I’m concerned the company that provides me with my autoresponder service (12 Second Commute) has “given the farm away” with the promotion going on now, unlimited complete set of online and email marketing tools for $19/mth. (summer time special offer) You can’t beat that bargain, plus up to 60% commission… I’m staying!
